Cedar pergola with string lights over a stone patio seating area

Pergola Construction in Charlotte, NC

A pergola turns an open deck or patio into a defined outdoor room — filtered shade in the Carolina summer without closing off the sky. We build them freestanding or attached, in wood sized to last.

What we do

We build pergolas from pressure-treated pine or cedar with proper post footings — not the wobbly kit-store versions. Beams and rafters are sized for the span, so the structure looks substantial and stays straight for decades.

Attached pergolas tie into the house structure for a seamless look over patios and decks; freestanding designs anchor a corner of the yard — over a dining area, an outdoor kitchen, or a fire pit zone.

Add-ons include privacy screens, lattice tops for more shade, lighting, and fan mounts. We'll help you pick the right coverage level for how you use the space.

Common questions

How much shade does a pergola actually give?

A standard open-rafter pergola cuts direct sun by roughly a third to a half, depending on rafter spacing and orientation. Adding a lattice top or angling the rafters increases coverage. If you want full shade and rain protection, look at our patio covers instead — we'll help you compare.

Can you build a pergola over my existing patio?

Yes. We set posts alongside or through the existing slab with proper footings. A site visit tells us what the slab allows — the assessment is part of the free estimate.

Wood or metal pergola — what do you recommend?

We build in wood: it suits Charlotte-area homes, handles our climate well when properly treated, and is easy to customize and repair. A stained cedar or painted pine pergola also adds more warmth than an aluminum kit.
